Report of Management Committee Meeting and Working Groups - COST Action
ES0702
Integrated Ground-Based Observations of Essential Variables for Climate
and Operational Meteorology (EG-CLIMET),
Payerne, Switzerland, 5 - 7 November 2008
The HMEI Executive Secretary, Bruce Sumner, attended and reported on this meeting,
thus ensuring that HMEI
was able to provide industry perspective to this important issue.
Although Mr Sumner was only able to attend one day of this three day
meeting, very fruitful contacts and future collaborations were made.
OPENING OF MEETING
Bertrand Calpini, Director of Payerne Observatory, welcomed participants
to Payerne.
MEETING MINUTES
Prof Anthony Illingsworth, the Action Chairman presented the minutes
from the last meeting. HMEI was introduced by Prof. Illingsworth. Bruce
Sumner was able to give a short presentation on HMEI and how its members would like to
be involved in Working Group 1 of this COST Action...
REPORTS
Several items and reports were given. Some points to note are:
-
The next Workshop of CLIMET will be held in Oslo, Norway 16 – 18 March
2009.
-
11 countries have signed up to this
COST Action, and two more are about to
sign, bringing the total to 13 countries.
-
A website for this
Action Group has been developed: www.eg-climet.org. It includes information
on meetings, working groups, fact sheet, MoU, EoC, etc.
-
HMEI will contact the webmaster Nico Cimini
and be added to the
distribution list.
WORKING GROUPS
Summary of the four Working Groups:
-
Instrumentation, Chairperson
- Volker Lehmann
-
Data Assimilation, Chairperson
- Per Unden
-
Observing Experiments, Chairperson
- Catherine Gaffard
-
Data Evaluation, Chairperson
- Hermann Russchenberg
The structure of the working groups was discussed. It was suggested
that the number of groups could be reduced, such as data evaluation
being moved into one of the other groups. It was emphasized that all the
groups need to keep closely in contact with each other. It was suggested
that WG1 could be split into two sub-groups, e.g. passive instruments
and active instruments.
Each member country gave a short overview (about 10 minutes each) of
their current activities relevant to this COST Action.
Many countries recognize the importance of industry expertise in this
activity, and four country delegations included a person from a
commercial company.
These are:
- Leosphere, (Laurent Sauvage) France
- Vaisala, (Raisa Lehtinen) Finland
- Radiometer Physics GmbH, (Dr Harald Czekala) Germany
- HALO Photonics, (Dr Guy Pearson) UK
Two of these are HMEI Member companies. In addition Gerhard Peters, a member of the METEK
(a HMEI Member) board, is also a
member of the German delegation,
The HMEI Executive Secretary met with Dr Czekala from Radiometer Physics GmbH and Dr Pearson from
HALO Photonics in the UK. Both expressed a strong interest in joining
HMEI.
Mr Sumner was able to have interesting individual discussions with several
senior people involved with this COST Activity, including Prof. Illingsworth
and Dominique Ruffieux, Dirk Engelbart and Volker Lehmann. All expressed
a strong commitment for having experts from the industry actively
involved in this Action, and that HMEI will continue to be kept informed
in order to become further involved in the Action.
