Attendees: Paul Fransioli, USA Peter Kaminski, UK Robert Young, USA Mike Sturgeon, USA Bruce Sumner, HMEI The meeting took place at the offices of the Romanian National Meteorological Administration, during the week of the METEOREX 2005 exhibition in Bucharest. The Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as a true report of that meeting. There was a general discussion on the sort of standards we should be involved with developing. It was agreed that our main purpose was to set consensus standards for instrumentation, such as standards for instrument testing and instrument calibration. For the current final standard that has been developed, namely sonic anemometers, the lead person was Gerhard Peeters of Metek. Other standards current being worked on include standards for wind tunnel testing and a standard for site evaluation. A proposal has been received regarding the development of a LIDAR standard. The proposal is that a German VSI standard be used as a start to an ISO standard. The proposal also suggested a Vaisala person from Germany as a convenor to the development of this standard. We will need to find people to join this group. HMEI will contact LIDAR manufacturers, with the aim of finding relevant experts who would like to work on the development of this new LIDAR standard. ISO Technical Committee (TC) 146 Plenary meets every two years, the next meeting is tentatively to be held at the ASTM meeting in Pennsylvania, 2-6 October. The next meeting of this group (SC-5) is suggested to be held at the same time and place. SC-5 is interested in the development of standards for radiosondes. It was stated that such a standard could be a benefit to many groups. It was proposed that an ad-hoc group be set up to investigate the feasibility of developing a radiosonde standard. The group reviewed comments for standard DIS 17713-1, Wind tunnel test methods for rotating anemometer performance, received from China, Germany, USA and UK. The next ASTM meeting, to be held during the AMS Instrument Meeting in June 2005 was discussed. The humidity standard that ASTM is developing will be further developed at that meeting. It would be very good for HMEI experts to become involved with ASTM standards activities, and the best way to do this may be by contacting Peter Wang of NIST, the Chairman of the ASTM Meteorology standards group, or indeed by HMEI becoming a member of ASTM.
