Report - HMEI at the 4th China International Exhibition on Technology and Equipment of Meteorology Science & Hydrology, China, 23-25 November  2007
This event also included the 6th China International Forum and Exhibition on Lightning Protection Technology & Equipment. WMO were co-sponsors of this event.

HMEI was a co-organiser of the exhibition. Large posters with the HMEI welcome message, in English and Chinese, along
with the HMEI logo, were prominently displayed at the entrance to the exhibition, greeting visitors and acknowledging HMEI
as a co-organiser.

The HMEI Chairman, Executive Secretary and Administrator represented the Association of HMEI at the event. The HMEI Chairman, Ben Dieterink gave a Welcome Speech at the opening and along with other dignitaries cut the ribbon to open the exhibition.
Please click here to see the Welcome Message. At the Welcome Dinner given by the organisers of the exhibition Mr Dieterink, as a dignitary was also asked to give a toast.

The HMEI Chairman, Mr Dieterink, was also invited by CMS to give a presentation on current technology innovations in meteorological instruments and equipment, at the concurrently held Chinese Meteorological Society (CMS) meeting in Guangzhou. This presentation included input from several HMEI Member companies.

As a co-organiser, HMEI was donated a booth, as well an entry and a full page advert in the exhibition catalogue, by the organizers, for which HMEI thanks them.

The HMEI booth with from left Ben Dieterink (HMEI Chairman),
Mandy (Chinese Interpreter) and Bruce Sumner (HMEI Executive Secretary)

Many copies of the CD version of the HMEI Catalogue were taken by  visitors to the exhibition. Mandy, the Chinese interpreter who HMEI was fortunate to have help us at our booth, was indefatigable in explaining the benefits of the HMEI website and the usefulness of the Catalogue in Chinese to the visitors to our booth.

Mandy was also an invaluable help as a translator in the Executive Secretary's contact with the Chinese companies attending the exhibition. So HMEI had the opportunity at this exhibition to meet with several Chinese manufacturers who expressed an interest in joining HMEI. The HMEI Secretariat will follow up on these contacts and expects to soon see some new members of HMEI from China.

HMEI Member companies who attended or were represented at the exhibition were:

It was as usual a great pleasure to meet up with those of our Members exhibiting at the China Exhibition and to meet there the China representatives of some of our Member companies.

The one problem, for which the organizers were most apologetic and over which they had no control, was that there was an un expected clash of dates regarding the CMS meeting and the exhibition dates, which resulted in a lower than expected number of visitors to the exhibition. Some HMEI Member exhibitors found this to be a cause of dissatisfaction with their exhibition experience. However other HMEI Member exhibitors found that this had no effect on their experience and considered the exhibition extremely successful and very worthwhile attending.

For HMEI as an Association the attendance at this exhibition with the HMEI booth was very successful.

8th European Meteorological Society (EMS) Annual Meeting and 7th European Conference on Applied Climatology (ECAC) 2008, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 29 September - 3 October 2007
The next EMS and the 7th European Conference on Applied Climatology will be held in Amsterdam, 29 October, 2008. There will be an exhibition associated with the event.More information is also available at: http://www.emetsoc.org/annual_meetings/annua_meetings_2008.php or http://www.copernicus.org/

The 2008 EMS and related conferences will be focused around the recent concerns on climate change and adaptation. The 7th European Conference on Applied Climatology (ECAC) to be held in conjunction with EMS 2008 has previewed a programme with two themes: Understanding of Climate and Adaptation to Climate, with the focus on applications for decision support and spatial planning on climate.

The organisers are looking to make the 2008 EMS events
serve as a "platform where experts and scientists of the European meteorological and atmospheric community meet private and public stakeholders to communicate about applications for understanding of and adaptation to today’s and tomorrow’s climate."

The EMS Annual Meeting programme sets out to support and enhance scientific exchange within the European context on the specific challenges of the meteorological science, and to reach out to the various sectors and stakeholders in the society. It includes the application of meteorology for the benefit of society, providing a platform for the meteorological community to discuss demands and aims for now and the future, thus creating synergies with the ECAC programme on adaptation.

The programme will have three streams:
- The Atmosphere and the water cycle
- Forecasting the weather at all time scales - THORPEX studies, developments in NWP, applications and societal impact
- Meteorology and society

A more detailed programme will become available in early February 2008 at http://meetings.copernicus.org/ems2008

Abstract submission: Mid-February - 16 May 2008.

Information can be found at www.emetsoc.org

Exhibitor opportunities will be an important feature of this conference and information will be available in due course at:
