UPCOMING/CURRENT INTERCOMPARISONS
Arctic Intercomparison of Screens, Temperature and Humidity Sensors,
Canada, 2011
A follow up Intercomparison of screens, temperature and humidity sensors
is planned to be held in a cold locality, namely the Arctic, starting in
the spring of 2011. Canada has volunteered to host this Intercomparison.
It is hoped that the participants will be the same as those in the
recently finished Ghardaïa, Algeria Intercomparison.
WMO Intercomparison of Radiosondes in
China
The report of the CIMO Expert Team on Upper-Air Systems
Intercomparisons and International Organizing Committee on Upper-Air
Systems Intercomparisons that was held in Yangjiang, China, from
31 August to 4 September 2009 is now available on the WMO website under:
http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/IMOP/reports.html.
There is a 'pre-planning' manufacturers meeting planned to be held
on 27th-28th January, (to include all participants if possible).
This is expected to be held in Geneva or Exeter UK. Invitations to participants will be
sent in due course.
LUAMI (Lindenberg Upper_Air Methods Intercomparison) Campaign in
Lindenberg, Germany, 3-24 November 2008
At the meeting, just held 2-6 June, of the CIMO ET on Upper-air
Systems Intercomparisons and IOC on Upper-air Systems Intercomparisons
in Payerne, Switzerland, it was decided that WMO would support an
Intercomparison Campaign to be held 3-24 November this year in
Lindenberg Germany.
Seven HMEI Member Radiosonde manufacturers attended this meeting (for
which there will be short HMEI report published on our website next
month). During the meeting the Lindenberg Upper-Air Methods
Intercomparison was addressed. Discussion focused, in part, on the
concern about the short notice given to manufacturers for the
organization of the Intercomparison. The Intercomparison is a GRUAN
initiative which wishes to look at instrumentation suitable for GRUAN
stations.
Three HMEI Members manufacturers have currently confirmed they will
participate in the Intercomparison: Graw; Leosphere; and
Vaisala.
The
brochure for the LUAMI Campaign is available here. Any manufacturers
wishing to be involved in this campaign please contact Franz Immler at:
franz.immler@dwd.de, with a cc
email please to HMEI at hmei@wmo.int.

Demonstration test of InterMet IMS 1600 Integrated Upper Air System, Dar-es-Salaam,
Tanzania, 18-30 October 2004
This test was performed to demonstrate that:
(1) The InterMet IMS 1600 Integrated Upper Air System was able to measure winds
to a satisfactory operational accuracy
(2) Temperature and humidity measurements from Sippican and Modem
radiosondes were of the quality expected from these radiosondes.
It was also intended as an opportunity for the staff from Tanzania to work with staff from
the UK and USA to develop their upper air observation skills.
