March 2000
Prof. Obasi Secretary-General of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) wrote a letter, bringing to the attention of manufacturers of instruments and equipment the possibility of establishing an association of manufacturers as a way to enhance collaboration with WMO.

October 2000
First informal meeting was called by Dr. S. K. Srivastava, during CIMO Technical Conference in Beijing.  
Organizing committee was established.

January 2001
Second meeting was arranged during the AMS Annual Meeting in Albuquerque.
The organizing committee was asked to develop the rules and procedures.
Preparations made for the establishment of the Association during EMS 2001, Sept 2001 in Budapest.

Constituting Meeting, Budapest, Sept 2001
Articles of Association were adopted
Rules of Procedure were adopted
Council of 8 members was elected

September 26th 2001
Formal establishment of the Association at the conference of the European Meteorological Society (EMS) took place in Hungary.

January 2002
The speech of Prof. Obasi, Secretary-General of WMO, at a meeting of the HMEI, held during the AMS Meeting in Florida, recognized the formal establishment of the HMEI.

June 2002
Consultative status at the WMO was granted to HMEI at the 54th Executive Council of WMO.

February 2003, General Assembly Meeting of HMEI. 
The first HMEI General Assembly, was held during the AMS Annual Meeting, in Long Beach, California, with an opening address by Prof. G.O.P. Obasi, Secretary-General of WMO.

June 2003
In June 2003 the HMEI office was established in the WMO building in Geneva, Switzerland, with Bruce Sumner as the new HMEI Executive Secretary.

January 2004 HMEI General Assembly at Seattle AMS
HMEI now established with over 20 member companies and continuing to grow, is addressed at its General Assembly 2004 by the new Secretary-General of WMO, Michel Jarraud.  

September 2004
HMEI attended its first International Organization for Standardization meeting, the ISO/TC 146 Air Quality - Sub-committee 5 in Sweden, and is invited to become a Liaison Member of ISO.
